South Sefton Sixth Form College

We recently completed the installation of multiple sound & recording systems at the new multi-million pound South Sefton Sixth Form College in Litherland, Sefton.

“Our expectations were high and we were delighted with the quality of consultancy and the equipment recommended, supplied and installed. The resulting provision offered by the college is outstanding. I have no hesitation in recommending you to others seeking a high-level, professional and effective service.”

Atrium sound

The College required a combination of reliable audio solutions in order to meet the requirements of A/AS Level courses including, Music, Music Technology, Performing Arts & Drama and Theatre Studies alongside other classic courses.

The impressive Atrium has a combined use as a social networking area also allowing performances from a designated area towards one end. A portable high power AA1214/AA18HL sound system was chosen for use within this space to enable high-level concerts, recitals and performances. A networked series of installed AA81 Full Range Loudspeakers supplement broadcasts through the large Atrium, providing clear audio coverage in what could be considered an acoustically demanding space.

The portable system includes a 16 channel Soundcraft mixing console playback, dbx graphic equalisers, digital processing and amplification which is compact and inventively packaged allowing use in other areas on or off the College site.

An AA121W wedge monitor system is included for artist on stage foldback during performances. Processing and amplification for both the portable and installed system is provided in the shape of flexible dbx260’s and efficient QSC RMX 2450/4050 power amplifiers.

Dance studio

The dance studio includes CD + MP3 playback through four wall mounted full range AA81 Loudspeakers. Sound in this area is controlled and amplified with a single rack-mounted Yamaha EMX512SC unit.

The AA81’s provide full coverage and consistency and the EMX512 offers flexible sound playback, as well as providing the option for teaching staff to use microphone headsets in dance and drama classes.

Music Technology Department

The recording studio was specified with a combination of analogue and digital equipment, in order to allow students to develop skills in both territories.

A 24 Channel Soundcraft Ghost was chosen as a control surface of choice with the possibility of all recordings being captured via MOTU soundcards.

All A Level Music / Music Technology coursework projects are captured in lLogic 8 on an Apple G5 Powermac then stored on removable drives for ease of data management & transfer. The studio includes Tannoy precision 8d monitors and additional outboard equipment including TC Electronic MOneXL and dbx compressors noise gates.

Music Department Cabling Infrastructure

Along with a comprehensive microphone package, a flexible cabling infrastructure was introduced throughout the music department featuring tie lines to all music tuition, recital and practice rooms.

Portable monitors and headphone stations were introduced to facilitate recordings in satellite rehearsal rooms.

Delivering the ‘wow-factor’

To meet the challenges of an aesthetically sympathetic install, commissioning and ensure the system was fully operational in a three week window we worked seamlessly with our client, their appointed contractors and the local authority.

Once operational our engineers provided intensive training for the newly appointed college tutors and supporting technicians to ensure the students arriving in September could make full use of the new music facilities from day one.
